Task Group (TG) on Alterations of Existing HVAC Systems - July 29th, 2025

Task Group (TG) on Alterations of Existing HVAC Systems - July 29th, 2025

Building Code Meeting Briefs

The TG, chaired by Miguel Gimeno, met to review the NBC 2025 Part 10 Alteration of Existing Buildings (AEB) draft. Members reviewed provisions requiring alterations to maintain or improve building performance, seal exposed ducts, insulate piping, and ensure adequate ventilation, with exemptions for heritage properties and minor repairs. Templates for reviewing AEB‑ and HVAC‑related provisions in the Ontario, Quebec, and Vancouver codes were provided, with both members and observers being asked to complete them to guide upcoming discussions in the next meeting which will take place sometime this upcoming October.

The AEB & HVAC Requirements Review template is intended to collect feedback on when alteration provisions should apply, whether requirements vary by occupancy, and the extent to which performance‑based approaches, exemptions, or relaxations are available. It also seeks input on HVAC‑specific requirements, including triggers for upgrades or replacements, applicable clauses, compliance alternatives, and performance or trade‑off paths.
