Task Group on Operational GHG Emissions in New Buildings and Houses (TG-OpGHGe) - April 8th, 2025

Building Code Meeting Briefs

The Task Group on Operational GHG Emissions in New Buildings and Houses (TG-OpGHGe) met for the first time. The TG has been established to support the development of code changes that will help reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions in new homes and buildings. This work is part of the mandate of the National Model Code Committee on Climate Change Mitigation.

Responsibilities of the TG were discussed, which include reviewing the GHG-related requirements in the 2025 editions of the National Building Code (NBC) and the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB). The group is also looking at relevant North American standards, provincial and territorial approaches, and proposed change forms (PCF 2003, 1868, 2004, and 1869). Based on this review, the TG will be recommending updates such as extending intensity-based compliance pathways, updating GHG emissions factors, and refining prescriptive options.
