Task Group on Legionella in Building Water Systems

Task Group on Legionella in Building Water Systems

TECH - Building Code Meeting Briefs

January 13, 2026

The main purpose of the fourth Task Group meeting was to review PCF 2174 Design of Potable Water Systems per Water Demand.

Calculator Method which provides the option of using the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator for designing potable water systems in residential buildings. The water demand calculator can be used to justify the use of smaller pipes and was adopted by the City of Vancouver with positive results. The Members of the Task Group were in full support of forwarding the proposed change to the National Model Code Committee on Indoor Environment for review and approval.

CHBA recommended the section on "Enforcement implications" be updated to highlight the need for training and that the "Who is affected" section be updated to outline what the impact will be in the listed individuals. CHBA also suggested that the Stantec report mentioned in the impact analysis be attached to the PCF in order to make it easy for reviewers to access the report. It was unclear if suggested edits will be made to the proposed change before it's shared with the National Model Code Committee.
