Task Group on Legionella

Task Group on Legionella

November 19, 2025

The Task Group received a presentation by Dr. Patrick Gurian (Drexel University) on the key findings from recent research carried out by his students on the impact of plumbing design, velocity, and operational factors on microbial activity including Legionella formation during stagnation in pipes.  In general, there is a concern with temperature and flow being too low to prevent growth, causing significant health issues.

Hugo Aguilar with the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) presented on Code Change Request (CCR 2052) which introduces the option to size potable water systems in residential applications using the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator (WDC). The proposal aims to modernize pipe-sizing tables by providing an option in addition to existing pipe sizing requirements dating back to the 1940s. The City of Vancouver also shared their experience implementing the WDC within their jurisdiction, highlighting lessons learned and considerations.  It was adopted as a cost saving measure for the city and improve the health of Vancouver citizens.

Codes Canada staff also presented the finding for a jurisdictional scan of current requirements.  The task group will begin work on developing proposed changes under seven topic areas.  Water temperature and the right sizing of pipes appear to be at the top of the list. CHBA recommended that the TG identify the highest priorities for both new and existing buildings.

The agenda package can be found below.
