Task Group on Grab Bars

Task Group on Grab Bars
September 9, 2025
The Task Group on Grab Bars (TG-GrabBars), chaired by Dustin Garnett (Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency), held its first orientation meeting to review updated Terms of Reference. CHBA is not a member and, as a stakeholder, cannot participate in working groups under this task group.
CBHCC revised the mandate to focus on grab bar backing in dwelling units, not installation, though installation requirements remain for hotels and motels under the 2030 Code. Staff also updated members on the 2025 Code’s approved provisions for backing in tubs, showers, and toilets, including prescriptive Part 9 requirements for wood-framed walls designed to meet existing loading requirements.
An unresolved concern from the previous code cycle raised by CHBA—possible impacts on warranty for waterproofing membranes behind tile—was discussed with reference to a “Precautionary Letter” from the National Tile Contractors Association included in the agenda package. No decision was reached; CHBA recommended further discussion with all relevant groups present in order to resolve this issue.
The Task Group will next review code change requests (CCRs), including several from Accessibility Standards Canada, initially focusing on hotels and motels. Work will also continue on outstanding issues from the last cycle, including prescriptive requirements for steel studs.
CHBA sought clarification on who now decides whether a CCR has merit under the new development system. Staff noted the new operating procedures do not define this, but proposals must demonstrate a problem and comply with established rules for code requirements.
