Task Group on Accessibility in Buildings
Task Group on Accessibility in Buildings
November 20, 2025
The Task Group, chaired by Michaela Bojes (City of Calgary), met for the third time to review six Part 3 proposed change forms (PCFs) to determine if they can be sent to the National Model Code Committee on Accessibility (NMCC on Accessibility). They also quickly reviewed the status of code change requests "triaged" to date.
Of most interest, PCF XXXX: Compliance paths in 3.8.3. and update of CSA B651-18 to -23 – will only include one compliance path via 3.8.3 and refer to the updated (2023) version of CSA B651 since the references will not result in technical changes.
CHBA asked whether the Task Group (TG), National Model Code Committee (NMCC), or the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) are responsible for the harmonization of these proposed changes. Staff explained that the process includes a jurisdictional scan and the proposed changes are then sent to the NMCC on Accessibility, Standing Committee on Codes Coordination to ensure there are no conflicts with other code requirements, and finally to the CBHCC for approval pending public review.
The Task Group discussed whether construction barricades should be “cane detectable”, which Codes Canada staff advised would mean there could be no more than a 680 mm gap under the barricade.
Codes Canada also staff quickly reviewed the 76 code change requests outlined in the workplan included in the agenda package.
