National Model Code Committee on Indoor Environment
National Model Code Committee on Indoor Environment
November 4, 2025
Task groups provided updates on their work:
- The radon task group discussed options for active sidewall radon stacks, reviewed research on costs and enforcement, and noted that their proposed code change was still under review.
- The HVAC and plumbing alteration groups are developing new code sections, reviewing provincial codes, and preparing to draft additions in the coming year.
- The Legionella group is reviewing guidelines and will develop code provisions for building water systems, including considerations for new construction and biofilm management.
- The indoor air quality group is focusing first on care and treatment facilities, aiming to make CSA Z317.2 compulsory, and will later address other public buildings.
A proposed code change (PCF 2007) was discussed to clarify lavatory requirements in public washrooms, aiming to resolve confusion between building and plumbing codes. The committee agreed to add a note in the building code referencing the plumbing code requirements.
A code change request (CCR 1298) suggested mandating minimum filtration standards in HVAC systems. The committee discussed existing standards, enforcement challenges, and maintenance issues, and agreed to refer the issue to the indoor air quality task groups for further review and a recommendation as to whether to develop or reject the CCR.
