Standing Committee on Housing and Small Buildings

Standing Committee on Housing and Small Buildings

Building Code Meeting Briefs

December 11, 2024

This marks the sixty-ninth and final meeting for the Standing Committee on Housing and Small Buildings (SC-HSB) during this code cycle, which exceeded all previous records for the number of Standing Committee meetings in one Code cycle.

The Committee reviewed and approved nine sets of draft minutes and included all of CHBA's recommended corrections.  Most notably, corrections were made to the draft minutes for the September 4, 2024 (2020-62) meeting regarding the updated Truss Plate Institute of Canada (TPIC) guideline which is problematic for factory builders.

Following a staff presentation on the updated report from the Joint Task Group on Potential Consequences of High Performing Homes, the Committee was asked to "accept" the report so that it could be sent on to the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC).  CHBA questioned what it means to accept a report with errors and omissions, including a few examples provided during the meeting. CHBA also asked where the Association should register its concerns given that this is the last meeting on the SC-HSB. The Committee agreed to send the report to the Board suggesting that it be reviewed, noting that one of the stakeholders had identified errors and omissions which the Committee did not have time to consider.

An update was also provided on how the cross-committee coordination comments on the accessibility and visitabilty proposed changes had been addressed.

The chair thanked all volunteer members and Codes Canada staff for all of their efforts and noted that hopefully the new system will consider the unique requirements in Part 9.
