Standing Codes Coordination Committee

Standing Codes Coordination Committee

April 15, 2025

The Standing Codes Coordination Committee met for the first time. This new committee composed of eight members and all National Model Code Committee (NMCC) chairs will be responsible for coordinating code development activities and acting as a "central hub". Its role will include identification of areas where coordination is required among the NMCCs. i.e. cross-committee coordination.  It will also help coordinate impact analyses being carried out by the NMCCs and keep track of the cumulative impact of code changes as directed by the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC).

Like other first-meetings in this code cycle, this meeting included a general orientation for the members and observers. Staff also presented on the requests from the codes user community for new tasks. This is being referred to as "bottom-up work" that falls outside of the strategic priorities identified by the CBHCC. It was noted by CHBA and others that there are existing issues in the National Building Code that need to be prioritized, including requirements in the 2020 NBC that were rushed through the process.

Committee members were asked to review code change requests that had been triaged for future consideration and identify their top 10 prior to the next meeting (date yet to be set). The chair noted that the committee will then determine its top 10 code change requests for recommendation to the CBHCC.
