Register now for the Fall NZC Meeting
OCT 20 | OTTAWA | Room Block Expires SEP 22
Registration is now open for the 2025 CHBA National Fall Meetings at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel from October 20-24. The Net Zero Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 20th from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm with the Net Zero Networking from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
The entire afternoon (1:30-4:30) is dedicated to sharing the outcomes of the work CHBA is doing with the Institute of Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) to integrate practical, cost-effective climate resilience measures into Canadian homes. This joint effort, the Resilient Homes Task Force (RHTF), has conducted field trials, including design charettes and builder-led evaluations of resilience measures that will help create tiered checklists of solutions for wildfire, high wind, hail, and urban flooding—designed to be constructible and impactful. CHBA would like to thank the many CHBA builders and renovators who have so far contributed their time and insights into the RHTF project. With many of you providing critical input through surveys and field trials, this initiative is now grounded in real-world experience. At the NZC meeting, builders will get a first look at the checklists, hear from peers involved in the field trials, learn about the insurers’ perspective and be part of the conversation on how CHBA and ICLR can help builders integrate more resilience into their projects. We encourage members to attend and be part of this important conversation. The full schedule, registration link, and hotel discount information can be found here.

CHBA Responds to Codes Policy Consultation on Embodied GHG Emissions in Homes
Embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are those emissions released during the production, transport, and installation of building materials—before a building is occupied. In July 2025, the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) had consulted stakeholders on its draft policy direction on regulating embodied GHG emissions in the 2030 National Model Codes. CHBA submitted a detailed response, asking to exempt wood-frame homes, which already perform well on embodied emissions. CHBA also cautioned that regulating at this early stage—before sufficient data, tools, and impact assessments are in place—could lead to unintended costs and reduced housing supply. If homes are not exempt altogether, CHBA is advocating for a reporting-only approach for embodied GHG emissions in the 2030 code, before setting performance tiers (as was done with energy efficiency), and proposing a sufficiently low cut-off value, below which homes would be exempt. CHBA is also urging the CBHCC to integrate embodied GHG requirements with energy and climate resilience planning, rather than layering them in piecemeal over future code cycles. Members can read CHBA’s full submission which is also available in PDF in the CHBA Knowledge Centre. For questions, please contact Frank Lohmann frank.lohmann@chba.ca.

Sound Visualization Method for Locating Air Leaks in Buildings
SEP 9 | 12:00 to 1:00 ET
What if you could see where a building leaks without relying on temperature differences or pressurization? Acoustic imaging is an emerging technology that does just that. By visualizing sound escaping through cracks and gaps, it allows energy advisors and building professionals to pinpoint air leakage in real time, even during construction or in modular units. In this session, we’ll explore how acoustic imaging complements blower door testing, fills the gaps left by thermal cameras in warm weather, and opens up new possibilities for envelope diagnostics in sensitive or occupied buildings. You’ll see real-world examples, learn how the technology works, and discover how it can help you deliver better airtightness, faster diagnostics, and smarter retrofit decisions. Visit cacea.ca/events to learn more and register.

Historic International Court of Justice Opinion Confirms States’ Climate Obligations
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has delivered its much-anticipated advisory opinion on states’ obligations to tackle climate change, confirming that international law requires states to prevent significant harm to the climate—and failure to do so can trigger legal responsibility. While the ICJ’s opinion itself is not binding—neither on itself nor on domestic courts—it carries considerable legal weight and political legitimacy. The opinion puts forth that adaptation can no longer be treated as an option, but a legal obligation. It clarifies governments’ accountability for their (in)action on strengthening resilience and providing support for the most vulnerable countries in meeting the costs of adaptation. Ultimately, the ICJ affirmed that international law supports—does not hinder—climate ambition. The opinion is likely to influence future domestic and international climate litigation, shape negotiations under the UN climate regime, and provide new leverage to vulnerable states seeking accountability and climate justice. Read more about the key findings here.
