Builder Tested Resilience Checklists Now Available
The Resilient Homes Task Force (RHTF) – a collaboration between the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – has published a new set of practical resilience checklists for residential construction. Developed over the past two years, the checklists were refined through builder‑led field trials with CHBA members to ensure they are constructible, clearly prioritized, and aligned with real on‑site practices. CHBA member feedback also highlighted supply chain challenges for resilience-related products. The published checklists provide a clear, tiered approach (Good, Better, Best) to voluntarily improving resilience to hazards such as flooding, hail, high wind, and wildfire. CHBA and ICLR will continue this work over the next five years, focusing on increasing recognition of the checklists, educating consumers, encouraging product manufacturer to offer resilient products and the associated training for builders and renovators. The RHTF will also create opportunities for insurance-led field trials to test incentives linked to the checklists. For more information, please contact Bilal El-Zaylaa.

This AI tool for net-zero research discloses its energy use
ChatNetZero, an AI chatbot trained to handle questions about greenhouse gas emissions targets, helps climate professionals use AI with more confidence by grounding answers in verified sources and making energy use more transparent. It was created because general AI chatbots aren’t a reliable source of answers to questions about greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. It can now tell you how much energy was used to generate the answer, and because ChatNetZero is trained with a specific data set it requires less power to deliver answers. Read more here and access ChatNetZero here.

IESO Report finds Wind & Solar Energy + BESS can meet at least 99.5% of Ontario’s peaking and base-load electricity needs
In August 2025 the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) released a new report: Hybrid Resource Portfolio Equivalency Assessment. Integrating a large portfolio of variable generation resources into the IESO-controlled grid will present challenges for system planners and operators due to the intermittent nature of the resources. However, advancements in battery technology and declining prices are providing opportunities to better utilize these resources, enhancing their performance and effective grid penetration. This paper explores the capability and costs of resource portfolios consisting of various variable generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS) to meet defined need profiles and compares them with combined-cycle gas turbines and small nuclear reactor options to meet the equivalent needs of baseload generation. The report had two very important findings about the potential for wind, solar and BESS: They can meet at least 99.5% of Ontario’s peaking and base-load electricity needs AND they can do it at a lower cost than new small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). You can find the IESO Technical Report here and the Ontario Clean Air Alliance Research briefing note here.
