EO/Board Call: The Role of the Board in Financial Oversight

Join us for a two-hour ZOOM session centred on the Board’s role in financial oversight, namely, using financial information as a key tool for the direction and control of the organization. The central theme always relates to strategy: what questions should we ask? What ratios, red flags and risks can we identify and explore to be confident that we have the right strategy and are executing well? A Board with strong financial literacy is well-positioned to achieve its mandate.  We will also ensure the staff perspective is considered as well. Please invite your new and incoming Board members. What EOs Need to Know About CHBA Fall Meetings in Ottawa

CHBA is hosting the Fall Meetings in Ottawa from October 21-25. The National Committees and Councils, the Executive Officers’ Council (EOC), and the CHBA Board of Directors will be meeting to conduct the association's business. These are important meetings for national committee/council members and their associated EOs to attend to advance both the business of the national association  and that of local and provincial HBAs. The meetings are great for all EOs, even those who don’t have a member on a committee/council, to get up to date on the extensive array of  ongoing CHBA business in support of your members. As an EO, you are a member of the EOC and should have received an invitation to attend the EOC roundtable on Wednesday, October 23 at 5PM ET. All EOs are invited and encouraged to attend all meetings on the Fall Meetings schedule. CHBA has prepared a wiki article for EOs on everything they need to know about the fall meetings. Membership Reporting: 2024-2025 Remittance Forms Available 

Visit chba.ca > Resources > HBA Resources to learn how membership reporting to the national level works for those who use GrowthZone, the advantages for your members in reporting monthly for those of you who don’t use GrowthZone (and a new updated reporting template now that RenoMark does not need to be reported), and an explanatory video for how to use the Membership Remittance Forms, which have now been updated for 2024-25. Please note that all membership reports should go to membership@chba.ca.

September EOC Call Recap: CHBA Update  

This month’s EOC call included a RenoMark Verification Update in advance of the September 30 deadline for members, and plans for a RenoMark Governance Committee to ensure renovators and all participating HBAs are at the table for RenoMark discussions. EOs also received a special look at regional breakdowns from the CHBA’s latest  Housing Market Index (HMI) – CHBA is using this data to inform discussion on housing issues, but more participation is needed to publish regional breakdowns.  Also discussed was the reintroduction of a CHBA Rooftopper Award (given to the member who brings in the most new members) and the recent federal government announcement on mortgage rules, from which “positive” key points to use when speaking to the media have been prepared. Economic Impacts Fact Sheets Coming Soon  

Each year, CHBA produces Economic Impact Fact Sheets that report on the significant economic impacts of the residential construction industry across Canada at the national, provincial and community levels. Before releasing this year’s data, EOs will be asked to review the Fact Sheet(s) for their region(s) and inform CHBA if any HBA contact information needs to be changed. You’ll also receive more information about CHBA’s plans for releasing the Fact Sheets, as well as some changes to the data calculation going forward now that CHBA is preparing these in-house. 

Free IBS Education for EOs and Staff

If you or your members are attending the International Builders' Show® (IBS) in Las Vegas, the CHBA Canada Night Reception on Wednesday, February 26 is the place to be! More details to follow, but the date is confirmed. IBS is an annual event hosted by NAHB (our American counterparts) that connects, educates and improves the residential construction industry. It’s a hub for new product launches, construction demos, industry thought leader sessions, workshops, panel discussions, and more. Registration is free for Canadian HBA staff, and CHBA members get a discount. To register, visit the IBS website and select “State and Local Association Staff.” You should then see your province available in the dropdown.
