Association Leadership Awards
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEB 10
Don’t delay! It’s time to enter the CHBA Association Leadership Awards, the biggest accolades given out at the national level of the Association. Use this recognition as a promotional leverage throughout the year. In response to feedback, there are now separate categories for small (less than 200 members) and large (greater than 200 members) HBAs. This means you can apply to: HBA of the Year (large/small), EO of the Year (large/small), or Community Service Award (for HBAs). CHBA is bringing back the Rooftopper Award, which is now known as the Membership Champion Award, to recognize the member who has made the most impact in their association by recruiting new members. In addition, your HBA can name two members (one builder/renovator and one from another membership category) who have promoted the mission and objectives of the Association at your local/provincial level. The two people you name will automatically receive the Award of Honour certificate, which provides national recognition for their efforts and is perfect for giving out at dinner meetings or association functions. The deadline to apply has been extended to February 10, 2025 (until end of the day). For entry forms and all the details on categories, click here.

2025 EOC PDF Save the Date!
JUNE 10-12 | ST. JOHN’S, NL
The 2025 EOC Professional Development Forum will be held on June 10 – 12 in St. John’s, NL; please note the change to a Tuesday start. New for this year, we are planning an optional, fun social activity on Tuesday during the day (this will be an add-on cost for those who wish to participate), so plan to come early! We will be staying at the JAG Hotel, steps from the famous George Street and known for its musical theme throughout. The hotel block is now available. There will be panel and round table discussions to further engagement and learning within the EOC. If you need help convincing your Board of the value of attending the PDF, we can support you with a letter from the CHBA President of our Board of Directors. We can also supply a bursary for those who show financial need to attend. The draft agenda, hotel information, and bursary information are here. Registration will open in the spring, and the hotel block is available now.

Expression of Interest – CHBA National’s Women in Residential Construction Council (WIRCC)
Following the discussions during the November 19, 2024, monthly EOC call, CHBA is now formally asking for expressions of interest to participate in the new national Women in Residential Construction Council! The approved Terms of Reference (ToRs) are in the HUB here. We are specifically asking for volunteer member representatives from provincial and local HBAs with a Women in Residential Construction Council (or equivalent). Other local HBAs that are demonstrably involved in advocacy and/or initiatives that support/promote women in the sector can be considered for membership upon request and on a case-by-case basis, especially those looking to establish their own such council. Please note that the inaugural meeting of the WIRCC will take place during the pre-conference meetings of Home Building Week in Canada, in Victoria on Monday, May 12, 2025. Interested EOs can email their representative’s name by February 21, 2025 to Leah Nord, who can answer any further questions.

Economic Impact Fact Sheets Available
As a reminder, each year CHBA produces fact sheets that report on the economic impacts of the residential construction industry in Canada. There are fact sheets for the national, provincial and municipal levels (as defined by Statistics Canada’s Census survey). The fact sheets are used for government advocacy by all three levels of the association. Based on the latest data (from 2023 in this case), the fact sheets include estimates of wages paid to workers and investments made to the economy that are supported by home construction. These estimates are also further broken down into the new home construction and renovation services industries within communities across Canada. The fact sheets can be accessed here. For convenience, the fact sheets are available through PDFs as well as a condensed Power BI dashboard. If you have questions about the fact sheets, please email CHBA Economist Evan Andrade.

January EOC Call Recap: Federal Election Readiness
During the January EOC call, we discussed the implications of the recent prorogation of parliament and the timing options of a federal election. The immediate effect on CHBA National is that the planned February 11 Day on the Hill event has been cancelled. CHBA has been maintaining relationships with all political parties and preparing advocacy recommendations well before the election, whether the election is called in the spring or in the fall. There was some discussion on adherence to the Elections Canada Act regarding HBAs acting as lobbyists. Overall, the discussion emphasized the necessity of strategic planning and ensuring common messaging, provided by CHBA, is used in the lead-up to elections. EOs were encouraged to alert CHBA of any meetings they have with federal MPs.

Training Rebate for Members to Get Ready for Tiered Codes
Your members are eligible for $330 training rebates on select courses as part of CHBA’s 3-year, NRCan-funded project called Enabling Tiered Codes – Implementation and Market Preparedness. The project’s goal is to help prepare the industry for future building codes and help CHBA inform the code development process with builder insights, and these rebates support the project objective of building industry competency. Please note that the rebates are only available on select course, and only to CHBA members who pass the exam. For more information about this funded project and links to register for the training, members can visit this page!
